Program Description

The Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (GPPS) at Texas Southern University was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board on July 15th, 2004. Adhering to the mission of the program, the program has been effectively training students, especially underrepresented minorities, for successful careers in the pharmaceutical sciences.

Faculty in the GPPS program are highly qualified scholars in the areas of pharmaceutics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry and cancer genetics, with track-record of publication, presentation, patents and funding. They are successfully funded by various agencies, such as National Institutes of Health (NIH), Cancer Prevention and Research institute of Texas (CPRIT), and other foundations. Faculty’s labs are fully equipped with state-of-art instruments for students to conduct cutting-edge research.

Students in the GPPS program are trained in biomedical and pharmaceutical principles via didactic courses. Student learning is assessed by the qualifying and comprehensive examinations. Students also participate in literature review, grant writing and manuscript preparations. Importantly, every student is encouraged to take leadership role in managing his/her own research project. This is accomplished through PhD Research and Dissertation courses, where students have close interactions with his/her faculty mentor(s). Students are exposed to cutting-edge knowledge, state-of-art techniques and instrumentations ensuring they are fully prepared for their future careers. We are extremely proud that our past alumni graduated from GPPS all have dynamic careers in pharmaceutical companies (Merck, Pfizer, Elli Lilly, Regeneron, Charles River Laboratory, etc.), academia (MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas A&M University, etc.), and FDA, fruitfully engaged in pharmaceutical research.

We sincerely welcome students, especially underrepresented minorities, to join our diverse, vibrant and highly productive GPPS program at TSU!
