Program Description
-------------------
Program Description:
Pharmaceuticals are increasingly being used to cure, treat, manage, or provide relief for many human afflictions, however, issues of financing, efficiency, access, adherence, and safety of pharmaceuticals continue to challenge the health care systems of the world. The Pharmaceutical Sciences M.S. and Ph.D. programs offer a Pharmaceutical Evaluation and Policy (PEP) track to meet the training needs of persons with business, science, and health care backgrounds wishing to contribute to the understanding of the value, safety and outcomes of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical policies. Ultimately, the goal of the Ph.D. curriculum is to provide the training and skills for persons to be independent research scientist in these fields.

PEP works closely with state, national, and international leaders to help guide policy evaluation and development and to conduct rigorous original research evaluating pharmaceutical and pharmacy services. Our program utilizes an applied approach where graduate trainees gain strong analytic skills that have applications in Pharmacoeconomics, Comparative Effectiveness Research, Epidemiology, Patient Reported Outcomes and Health Policy Analysis. Graduates of the PEP program have successfully pursued careers in industry based Health Economics and Outcomes (HEOR) positions where persons communicate value propositions for pharmaceutical based technologies as well as careers in academia, health payers, managed care organizations and in government. The PEP program shares some curricular competencies with other graduate programs in Pharmacy Administration, Social and Administrative Sciences, Pharmacy Care Administration, Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy and Pharmaceutical Health Services Research with an emphasis on evaluating pharmaceutical effectiveness, value and safety.
