Program Description The University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy offers a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, developing independent research skills necessary to create new knowledge in the field of pharmacy. Graduate students at USC receive interdisciplinary training and education, all while developing a personalized program of study in one of our two Ph.D. tracks.

Ph.D. candidates in the Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences track embark on research training which encompasses the understanding of disease mechanisms and drug toxicity and the design and development of pharmaceutical and anti-cancer agents. This training in the physical and biological sciences applies to health-related research, enabling degree holders to pursue careers in academia, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, or government agencies.

Ph.D. candidates in the Pharmaceutical Outcomes Sciences track develop data analysis skills and specialized expertise in pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, or implementation science and health policy. Candidates in the Pharmaceutical Outcomes Sciences track will be prepared for a variety of career choices that include teaching and research at academic institutions, research in the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical sales, regulatory governmental agencies, health care consulting, among others.

Additional Information about Degree Requirements: Each concentration requires a minimum of 60 hours beyond the baccalaureate degree or a minimum of 30 hours beyond the master’sdegree (DDBS concentration) or a minimum of 34 hours beyond the master's degree (POS concentration) as approved by advisement. At least 12 credithours of dissertation preparation are required. TThe Ph.D. degree requirements include an admission-to-candidacy examination, a comprehensive examination, and a dissertation.
