Program Description The doctoral program in Health Economics requires coursework in economics, preventive medicine, policy research and epidemiology. Additionally, specialized courses in pharmaceutical economics, including pharmaceutical policy, health economics, economic assessment methods, applied health econometrics and welfare theory are part of the core curriculum taught within the department. A limited number of electives in public administration, biostatistics, comparative analysis of health systems, gerontology, marketing, pricing, psychology and other related disciplines are considered on an individual basis. From the beginning of the academic program, students are encouraged to work closely with faculty on collaborative research projects.
The following areas of specialization are recommended for PhD candidates in the Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy track:
Methodology of Cost-Benefit and Cost-Effectiveness Analyses
Industrial Organization of Pharmaceutical Markets
Quantitative Methods in Pharmaceutical Economics
Government Policy and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals

Enter any additional information regarding the GRE: The Health Economics program requires applicants to submit GRE scores.  There is no set minimum score required for admission, and GRE scores are considered in conjunction with all other parts of the application.

Other tests or credentials: A minimum TOEFL iBT score of 100 is required. For exams taken on or after January 2026, 5.0 or above is competitive. Also, USC's Institution Code is 4852.
USC accepts IELTS score with a 7 or above.
Additionally, we accept Cambridge English C1 Advanced Exam with a test score of 185 or above and USC accepts the Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 68 or above.
